That 30 days of HP Meme that everyone and their dog is doing...

01. Discuss how you got into Harry Potter

I came into HP a little late, I guess. It was either in 2000 or 2001 (can't remember which, exactly). Andy was in the second grade, and his teacher started reading SS/PS to his class. The school sent home a note saying she was planning on reading ( Read more... )

And then I discovered fanfiction. I had no idea what fanfic even was at that time, but I was lucky, because I stumbled upon Checkmated first, which meant that, in general, the quality was better than what I might have found in other places. *cough ff.net cough*

Oh good. A girl in one of my classes decided to look for Harry Potter fanfic and went to ff.n... yeah, it didn't end well. I tried to tell her "no, don't go there", but it was like one of those movies where there's two characters, and one of them is trying to tell the other not to run towards the evil whatchacallit, and of course the second character keeps going and all the first character can do is scream. :P

Actually, back when I went to ff.n it was good, but that was way back in 2001. :/

As for me, my fandom route sort of goes like this:

2000-abt. 2003: AOL Harry Potter Messageboards

2001-2003: fanfiction.net

2002-2003: The Werewolf Registry

2003-2008ish: Sugar Quill

2003-: LiveJournal

2005-: Phoenix Song (I've been one of those pesky lurkers more than anything else - nothing personal!)

2009-: The Whomping Willow (my own messageboards)

There's definitely good stuff on ff.net, but there's lots of not-so-good stuff there, too. You just have to know how to wade through it all...and it takes patience.

You won't catch any hell from me about lurking at PS. If I hadn't come in at the very beginning (I think I'm member #11), I'd probably still be lurking, too.

Thanks!

Yeah, and honestly, I don't. It was easier when the site was smaller and I only had thirty to glance through... now it's more like thirty pages, and I'm not willing to do that. I will read recs though.

Plus, I don't like ff.net because of all the ads - it's just really inconvenient sometimes, plus I'll never forget how in one instance I accidentally clicked on an ad and got a virus. I've been going lately but only because a friend has started posting a fic there - it's a good fic and it's the only place I can find it, so I go. But after I'm finished reading I leave.

Honestly, lately I've just been getting my fic from fests and friends on LJ. I go to PS, but for some reason I have a hard time reading Harry in fanfiction, and given that PS is largely Harry/Ginny, that makes it hard.

Oh... *feels sad for being a fanfiction writer*
I promise, my fics aren't junk like some of the things there. :( Give 'em a chance...

My policy is to navigate through other people's favorites. If I find that I like the style they like, then I can devour all of those. That way, I don't have to "wade through the junk" as much.

There's definitely good stuff on ff.net. And I'm not knocking ff.net--I've got my stuff posted there, too, because it's got a wider readership than other places. (Erm...not saying my stuff is awesome or anything.) There's just a lot of not-so-good stuff there, too.

And I do the same thing you do--I wade through other people's favorites to find something. Although I've also been known to just "search" for Harry/Ginny (or Neville or whichever character I'm in the mood for) and see what comes up. If the summary looks interesting and it's not horribly written, I usually give the first chapter a shot. If I can't get through it, I'll just hit the back button and try again until I find something.

And usually (not always, but a lot of the time), you can search for longer fics (over 20,000 words or so) and find decent stuff, just because if someone's written that much, they're at least half-way decent. Of course, that eliminates most of the one-shots from your search results, which is a bummer for me, because a lot of the time, I'm just looking for a quick, fluffy piece to read (plus, 99% of what I write are one-shots in the 4000-10,000 word range), so I'm probably missing out on good fic (and on readers).
