First Attempt at Homemade Dog Food

Sep 04, 2008 00:18

Kelly, my husband's dog, has renal failure and I don't want to pay $45 for a percription diet.  So, after A LOT of reading later, we went to the grocery store and came up with a rough list of items to use in our first attempt at making homemade dog food.

Attempt 1:

2 packages cubed beef, cooked
1/2 pack frozen green beans, steamed
1/2 small pack baby carrots, pureed
~ 1 cup frozen peas, steamed
1 50mg Iron supplement, crushed
3 Calcium supplements, crushed
3 Vitamin C supplements, crushed
1 1/2 cups egg whites (packaged)
sprinkle of garlic powder
1 6oz package "Craisins" (no sugar added, non-flavored)
2 packs Kashi 7 Grain Original Pilaf

Dumped into a bowl and mixed thoroughly.

Hopefully this will last for a week, but if she keeps licking the bowl clean like she did tonight we might not make it quite that long. I must say that I was so relieved to watch her devouring her dinner...she's lost a significant amount of weight and muscle mass so hopefully this diet will help improve that.
