I had to bid farewell to Jene yesterday. She flew to cali today. Going to miss her for the next few months...
I leave for tx on thursday. pretty excited to see family and friends.
ran the Need for Speed Relay on sunday...here's a race report:
woke up at 4:30 and picked up the van and then the team. We drove up to Bear Mountain and readied for the race. Nature was great. We left Maya (our first runner) at the starting line and proceeded to transition area 1. They wouldn't let us stay to watch the start.
we arrived at transition area 2 and had plenty of time to kill. we stood around yelling for other teams and joking around. The first leg was pretty rough and was 8.4 miles. We mentioned that we'd start looking for maya in about 10 mins or so. Just as we finished our comments, we noticed her coming down the hill towards the transition.
leg two was another rough leg and was almost all on trails. runners were advised to carry a map and a cell phone. the driving directions sucked, so we got lost on the way to the second transition area, but we ended up helping a lost runner get back on course. When we arrived at the second transition area, we were take aback by the beauty.
we cheered as our lost runner made it through the finish and Christine followed shortly after almost on her exact pace.
Shay took off on leg three and we jumped in the van to go to the next transition area. Once again, due to crappy directions, we got lost. We made it to the transition area and I began warming up for a 3 mile leg. One of our runners didn't show, so I volunteered to take the extra leg. Shay finished her leg, and I took off.
I realized I was sprinting from the start, so I slowed myself down and began reeling in runners as I climbed the hills. Not more than a half mile in, I pass people walking and one girl puking. I continued to push on. Unfortunately there were no mile markers, so I had no clue how fast I was running. It was ridiculously humid and I felt like my lungs were going to explode as I continue to run uphill for the first 1.7 miles. The course leveled out and moved onto trails. As I passed a guy he said I had about 1.3 miles left. I looked at my watch and saw I was at 12:56 and realized how fast I was running. I continued picking people off as I manuevered through the trails and opened it up on the downhill. The course leveled out again and went across a field, where I could see the finish line in the distance. I pushed and went for the finish.
I crossed the finish line, handed off to Erik and collapsed on the ground. One of my teammates informed me I ran about a 19:20 for the 3 miles. No one passed me.
Erik was off for a 6+ mile leg and we drove to the next transition area. I started eating and drinking to refuel for my next leg. Erik finished his leg and handed off to Jene. We headed out in the van again and stopped off to get some food. Due to wrong directions, we got VERY lost and had to do some quick driving to make it to the transition before Jene finished. We got there only about a minute before she finished and we sent Caitlin off on her leg. Caitlin had a short leg and finished right on her pace
and handed off to Jeshu. Due to the crappy directions, we once again got very lost, but finally made our way to the last transition area in plenty of time for Jeshu's finish
i switched the chip to my leg and headed out, realizing that I had forgotten to put on my new race number.
I headed out and decided to push the pace. I began picking people off one at a time as I settled into a quick pace. Eventually after a few miles, the van caught up to me and Maya jumped out to hand me my race number on a race belt
I had to slow down to get the race belt. When I tried to pick the pace back up, I hit a hill and immediately felt the fatigue set in my quads. I struggled up the hill and turned the corner and forced myself to pick it back up. The course was through city blocks, so I had to weave around the random sunday strollers as I continued to pass runners. I finally settled into another good pace and pushed it up a series of rolling hills before I had to stop on an uphill at a traffic light b/c the cop wasn't paying attention. When I finally got started again, I could feel I had very little left in my legs. I pushed uphill and saw two guys in front of me. I picked off the one closest to me and and went for the other. I passed him just before turning a corner. When I turned the corner, I saw the finish line about 50 yards ahead and started sprinting
I crossed the finish line and felt like I was going to collapse, but was able to recover as I celebrated with me teammates. I'm still waiting on official times, but we finished second in the Co-ed Corporate Division, which isn't too bad considering there were only two guys on the team.
