Larry tipped me off to an interview with Shoji Kawamori, explaining how he works out the transformations of his mecha designs. Name not ringing a bell? He designed the Macross fighters, the Escaflowne mecha, the Outlaw Star ship... he designed Optimus Prime, for cryin' out loud.
The interview is in Japanese but there's a pretty concise summary to go along with it. Not gonna spoil it. :D
