I wound up going to the Chazen Museum of Art (
LINK) this weekend with some co-workers (long, sad story about how we went to see Spirited Away and didn't get in). So we spent the afternoon browsing the galleries and I found an artist I didn't previously know about that I'm in love with... Lee Bontecou (
LINK). This morning I Googled her and found out something extremely interesting -- There is a set designer currently working on a stage production of Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere and his stage design is derived from Bontecou's canvas/wire art work (
LINK). Way, way cool. Unfortunately, the Bontecou canvas/wire pieces just don't translate through photographs and you won't really be able to get just how cool they are unless you see them in person. If you have any in a museum near you, be sure to check them out.
Another piece I fell in love with (and, again, doesn't translate through photos) was "Cabinet of Curiosities" by Steffen Dam (
LINK). My favorite art form is paperweight glass work and this artist, in this piece especially, presses all my buttons.
I keep forgetting how awesome our museum is. It has the appearance of a small, back-water gallery, but we have some serious art there and it is all so freakishly accessible, it's startling. There are picassos sitting out on tables with no glass or ropes... You can get your face just inches away from stuff. Awesome.
