My sense of entitlement is invoking the Second Amendment

In all seriousness, this scares me more than nuclear annihilation, or revolution, or global warming...

All Free Library of Philadelphia Branch, Regional and Central Libraries Closed - Effective Close of Business October 2, 2009

I can only hope that this is something of a scare-tactic move on the part of the library and some sort of functionality will remain when the citizens are riled enough to rise up and protest enough to push the money through. If not, I predict Philadelphia will be Detroit in two years. When rampant unemployment sweeps the nation, you do *not* close the libraries - YOU DOUBLE THEM.

The mere thought of living in a country where there aren't free libraries available to every single one of it's citizens makes me want to pick up a gun and blow my fucking brains out. (Yes, yes I know... Some of you on my list don't really have a technically "free" library available to you... I'm speaking broadly.)

We're only just beginning our battle here in Madison, but I'm already scared... The privatization argument pops up every couple of years - and some of the ignorant, disgusting comments out of the mouths of my fellow citizens at the last main-branch renovation town meeting...? I'm scared. Really, really scared.

Discuss. (Keeping in mind that I am at least an 11 on the wank-meter regarding this topic and am likely to say stupid, uniformed, passionate things about it - I apologize in advance.)

wank, rants, world_events, wtf, books, social_justice
