(Lyrics here because they all get them wrong. A little abstract, because that's just how R.E.M. rolls, yo.)
He's got his work and she comes easy They each come around when the other is gone Me, I think I got stuck somewhere in between
I wouldn't confide in the prodigal son The die has been cast, the battle is won The bullets were blanks, a double aught gun I couldn't admit to a minute of fun
They come and they come and they come and they come I accept it with a gentle tongue No words spoken, no need --this gift
Take it, stomp twice, ring the bell Tether that ring and phrase Enough with the rifle and talk already We all know what it means
Take this conversation to your great divide I can only swallow what I ate And I don't hate him And I don't hate her
They come and they come and they come and they come I accept it with a gentle tongue No heart broken, no need --this gift
(Don't talk to me) Don't talk to me about being alone
Reach for each other before you leave Reach peace with an E-A-C Don't threaten me with a gentle tease Don't threaten me with angry Please, please, please don't try to tell me what I am
They come and they come and they come and they come I accept it with a gentle tongue No words spoken, no need --this friendship
(Talk to me) Don't talk to me (Talk to me) Don't talk to me about being alone
The trousers are from one of the suits - I've managed to buy exact replicas of the one above (the very tiny pinstripe), the gangster black & white larger pinstripe (minus a waistcoat), and a simple black suit. Which pretty much covers it (if I can sew a waistcoat that somewhat matches the gangster stripe.) I think he has a very dark blue suit as well, but it's a bit hard to tell on screen.
Another great song - I'm gonna have to download it and listen to it a couple of times in the dark though to really get the impact.
This seems like Ianto not saying goodbye to Jack at the end of "The Stolen Earth", but trying to be brave for him, and so heartachingly proud of his impossible soldier... so bright, so true. The man who may save the world, but not him.
I *love* that song - Shuffled up this morning, actually! :-) Yeah, good one for that Stolen Earth moment... I wouldn't have caught that - For some reason it's one of those songs I never hear the lyrics to when I'm listening to it - Just the music.
It's a lovely tune, isn't it? :-) When I googled the lyrics it was just ---yeah. When Jack finally had the means to be a big damn hero, he did just "light up". Ianto could see all his military training, his pride, his purpose and gusto. This is what Jack was born for.
You know what really kills me about that moment...? That Ianto so clearly thinks he's not going to live to see him again and frankly, I don't think *anyone* (including me) could think anything different - Except Jack... Who is just totally into Doctor/Yippie-kai-yi-yay-motherfucker mode and *totally* doesn't pick up on the mood. I don't think they could *actually* kill Ianto and Gwen but really, how can Jack honestly run off like that and not realize how ridiculously vulnerable they were being left there like that (he even took the Dalek gun with him) and expect to ever see them alive again?
See, I think he knew. Not that the Daleks were right there, because they didn't tell him, but that things were pretty fucking dire. That second "I'm coming back" was trying-not-to-cry desperate bluster. I mean, look at his face there: his Brave Face has totally slipped.
He knew. Not all, but plenty. I also think he's not sure that he's going to survive. They couldn't afford to let him think they were trapped: greater good etc.
I didn't think he was Doctor-crazy this time. He just had a chance to Save The World, which is what he loves to do. He has to stretch out and use his fullest power.
My sweet Ianto, trying to smile for him at the end of all things...
I think we come from different places with these characters - that may begin to show itself it we start meta-picking... The reassuring "I'm coming back" (and momentary pause) was about the fact everyone froze and doubted that he *would* come back when he said it the first time because the *last* time he ran off to save the Universe with the Doctor, he didn't (for three months or something) and they all still have abandonment issues and haven't really healed from it (and Jack realizes it because he had to work hard to gain everyone's trust back after the last time.) I really don't think he was thinking about how vulnerable and defenseless Ianto and Gwen would be when he left - But Ianto *was* and wasn't saying so (except with that cracking voice, which Jack totally didn't pick up on.) I know Jack didn't know the base had been sussed out but he still should have realized the danger they would be in and at the very least, picked up on Ianto's terror. But his mind was already elsewhere.
I'm not complaining - I just love that edge in Jack... That he can be so detached and almost cruel in his alienness sometimes. And boy, is it ever gonna burn with solar-angst if something *does* happen to them. And I love the "Doctor Who" Jack, who is all adrenaline junkie and yippie-kai-yi-yay-motherfucker but when he's like that, he's not Torchwood Jack and he's *not* focused on other people and there's something kind of superheroish about him...
But Ianto *was* and wasn't saying so (except with that cracking voice, which Jack totally didn't pick up on.)
OMG I didn't either, hear the cracking voice. :-( Oh God, poor Ianto.
I'll watch it again.
ETA: (sorry, boss alert)
I hope (am I cruel?) that Ianto is put through enough that when Jack does come back we get some massive mutual H/C. Davies, I want to fucking SEE it. I want Jack to CRAWL to Ianto and hold him so tight, I want them to embrace so hard they fall to their knees, because IANTO'S FUCKING EARNED IT. And Gwen will just have to wait for her special time, because Jack needs to cry over Ianto a little. Cry with grief, penitance, relief, love. LET THE BOY KNOW, for fuck's sake. And Ianto will give him a hero's welcome, practically radioactive with love, and all will be right in my fantasy world.
Sadly, I don't think we'll get the big H/C moment because it's Who - And maybe when we get back to Torchwood they will pick up the thread right away and give us all that there but it's hard to say.
What I'm waiting for - and you *know* it's possible after the gay office desk sex - Is a bed scene. A *graphic* bed scene.
I know! Most adorable icon! <3 to explodeyy
Here's another Ianto/Lisa/Jack triangle song. This one sounds like Ianto is tired... so tired of keeping up the game... but duty calls.

And that's why that scene makes me wibble.
