This morning I finally got around to watching the movie Stardust, and I really enjoyed it. Definitely a must see if you enjoyed The Princess Bride. It's basically a fairy tale for adults with witches, a fallen star, and a prince who doesn't know he is one. Oh, and of course, there is true love. You can't have a fairy tale without that! I'm thinking it's another movie to add to my collection.
As for the cake part of this entry, today I baked a lovely honey cake. Very simple to make, and very tasty. It really has an interesting mix of flavors. The cake is flavored with a combination of honey, coffee, brandy, and orange zest. None of the flavors is overwhelming, and they combine quite nicely.
I've been on a bit of a cooking binge since my parents have returned home. I've missed having people who enjoy good food to cook for. My brother's idea of good food includes Hamburger Helper, so when he was around, I wasn't about to do much cooking for him. Anyhow, on Thursday night I made some lovely German red cabbage which I served with bratwurst (I cannot tell a lie, I didn't make those) and pumpernickle bread (I didn't make that either). The cabbage was just wonderful; sweet and tangy. Not cabbage-y at all.
Then on Friday, we went meatless (since it's Lent), and I made my famous baked macaroni and cheese along with ginger and maple glazed carrots. Tonight my parents went out for Portuguese food, abandoning me. It's just as well because my tummy was acting up a bit this afternoon. I decided I dare not eat anything too exciting, so I made the classic comfort meal of Italians when they are sick (at least it's what my family makes sick people), and I must admit I am feeling better. What is this magical meal? It's just pastina (itty bitty pasta) cooked in chicken broth until just tender (you actually want to cook off most of the broth), and then you stir in two eggs that have been beaten with pepper and grated parmasean cheese. It's not exciting, but it's warm and not irritating to the stomach.
I think I am going to head back to bed with my book.
