The power of positive thinking. I could be the poster boy for the book or a motivational speaker. Of course being stuck in the cave wasn’t all that inspirational. I didn’t want to be there. Going to work had never seemed like such a chore before. Getting stuck in traffic so that I could be late would be nice if it weren’t for Agent Sunshine. He’d dock me for blinking if he could.
“Burke, what are you doing?” He’d glare at me, which seemed to be his only expression.
“Doing?” I’d ask.
“You blinked twenty-five times in the last minute. That’s twenty-five seconds where you weren’t paying attention to your assignment. I’ll have to write that into your official report.” Then he’d turn on his heels and vanish among the stacks of crates to sneak up on me for yawning.
“Ugh!” I let out a heavy sigh and forced myself to punch in on the time clock. I hadn’t used a time clock since high school when I was working in a grocery store. “I should’ve called in sick.”
“Sick, Burke?” I jumped at the sound of the Evil Overlord of Evidence’s voice.
“Just a bit of a headache,” I said with a huge smile. “I’m surprised you’re not in the field, sir. You’re very light on your feet.” Sneaky bastard. “The CIA would’ve loved to have you at Langley, I’m sure.”
“You’re late, Burke. Get to work.” He glanced at the clock and then toward the dark tunnel between the crates where my current assignment waited. “Those DVDs aren’t going to inventory themselves.”
Quite against my will, I glanced around, looking for Mozzie to appear out of the shadows on my way to my desk. While I appreciated his help more than I could say, there was a big part of me that was terrified of the mischief he might have caused while he was in here. I rubbed at the bridge of my nose, trying to drive off the headache that, that thought brought on. I had to make it fast too. God knew when Agent Sunshine would start monitoring my water, caffeine and oxygen intake.
