Mighty Ducks name newly-acquired defenceman Scott Niedermayer captain
ANAHEIM, Calif. (CP) - Scott Niedermayer will be the captain and his brother Rob Niedermayer and Sergei Fedorov will be alternate captains for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, the NHL team announced Monday.
Keith Carney will be an alternate captain in the event one of the three is not in the lineup.
"Scott Niedermayer will be a great leader for us, bringing experience, success and work ethic to our team," said head coach Randy Carlyle. "We also feel we have a large group of other veteran leaders on the club, and expect a collaborative effort from all of them to push this team in the right direction."
Scott Niedermayer, 32, helped New Jersey win the Stanley Cup three times. He was Devils captain for the final half of 2003-2004 after Scott Stevens was injured. He won the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenceman in 2004.
"It's an honour to be named captain of this team," said the native of Edmonton. "It's something I take seriously and with a great deal of pride."
I'm kinda surprised that Keith didn't get the A over Robbie. Hhmm, I hope they aren't shopping #3!
