I have some really fond memories of going round my local neighbourhood dressed up for Hallowe'en, saying 'Happy Hallowe'en' to my neighbours and getting spare change. My friends and I made a huge effort with costume, and then we went home and ate decorated buns with too much food colouring. We never threatened to 'trick' anyone, because my mum taught us that was rude and not a British tradition anyway. Hallowe'en was my favourite festival when I was a kid. I loved anything to do with witches and vampires and dressing up.
I actually find it tremendously depressing to be constantly told that the entirety of Hallowe'en is an American import. This is clearly a load of crap. I hate losing traditions because they get flattened by corporate America. But worse than this is the idea that just because one non-British aspect has come in ('trick or treating') we have to throw the baby out with the bath water.
Life is a joyless enough affair without surgically extracting all the occasions for celebration and wonder.
