Birth and Other Adventures

Most of you will know by now from Jamie's journal that we had the baby on the 6th (at 3:30 am), and have named him Marlowe H. Twine (Mal for short, 'H' is for Hall, my surname).

Primarily the name is inspired by the Chandler character, but any comparisons to historical playwrights or existential-angst-down-the-congo are entirely welcome.

I had to have a Caesarian because apparently I have a stupidly narrow pelvis and was advised that I was unlikely to get a baby through it, and definitely not without a good deal of damage. It all happened pretty fast and we had to make decisions quickly because the baby was in distress inside me. I opted for an epidural so I was conscious but very floaty-legged. I also switched off a part of my brain during the proceedings to avoid completely wigging out. I got Jamie to jabber at me inanely all the way through, about anything he could think of. I seem to remember him telling me about pet rabbits at one point and the relative merits of keeping boy and girl ones. Marlowe arrived to 'Ode to Joy' on the radio, which made us smile. If I didn't have a half-brother called Alex, we might have had an emergency name rethink :)

I got them to send me home early from hospital as other people's grumpy babies were ensuring I got no sleep at all - I was starting to really lose it with no sleep for some 30+ hours. Mum tells me that back in the good old days you used to get your own room when you had a Caesarean. Oh well. The staff were generally lovely so I shouldn't complain, and they did let me go home when I wanted to.

I'm full of pain-killers and pretty immobile right now, but Marlowe is lovely and keeping me entertained. I've even had some sleep. Mum and Jamie are looking after me. Mum keeps buying us treats and I am lounging about in some lovely new soft pyjamas that Jamie got for me.
