Yatta Yatta Yatterman!

Just finished watching "Yatterman" (after SO long lol) and in lieu of a review I will post the Facebook note I put up when I first heard about Sho showing (haha) "Yatterman" in New York, with some things changed to reflect the fact that I watched it.

I'd been hearing about this movie for some time, and it premiered at NY Comic-Con last Friday (February 6, I believe) to a crazy-ass reception (hint: its star is in a Japanese boyband). The film itself was awesome, for the following reasons:

(1) live-action anime is... great, because it's either fantastically good or fantastically bad;
(2) this was fantastically good;
(3) it's directed by Takashi Miike;
(4) it's MIIKE REMAKING A KIDS' SHOW;
(5) SHO FREAKING SAKURAI
(6) TIT-SHAPED CANNONS
(7) ROBOTS
(8) there's a whole load of subversive humour in it because of who the director is
(9) did I mention Sho Sakurai? ♥
(10) the director actually loves this show, even though it's miles away from something like "Ichi the Killer" or any other of his gory-ass films.

It contains so many of my favourite elements: anime, utter crack, boybands, tongue-in-cheek humour and high camp - all held together with a veneer of legitimacy as provided by a cult-favourite film director.

In short, it was everything I expected and absolutely nothing like I expected. The humour was off-the wall and cracktastic, true to Miike fashion, but waaaaaaaaaaaay more adult than I thought it would be. After all, it's a kids' superhero show done by Takashi Miike. Also, Kyoko Fukada is kinktastically hot in black leather and I love her take on the villain. Doronjo is a complete 180 from the frilly, lace-choked Momoko of Kamikaze Girls, but shares the same girlish-yet-nefarious heart. And of course, Sho is love. Say what you will about his acting skills, but his facial expressions are just priceless. Plus, he looks awesome flipping and flying through the air, especially given that he's afraid of heights. All in all, a brilliant performance from my beloved Captain Failboat. Supporting cast was great; Ai and Shoko were cute, and the henchmen were hilarious, especially as the fabulously pervy Boyacky was played by none other than Katsuhisa Namase, best known to audiences as the flawlessly pompadoured and pompous vice principal from Gokusen. CGI is great, especially under Miike's direction. I would totally pay to see this in theatres even though I downloaded it - it would be fifty times as awesome to see on a big screen.

It's weird, it's Japanese, it's super high-tech- it's fantastic. Go see it. NOW.

omfg joanne stop wasting time, joanne watches too much japanese tv, take a sho sho
