i found you in the wreckage of that ruined building.
the air was like knives in our lungs and you were the same grey as the sky and twice as fragile
there's nothing left you told me and I took your hand and we ran through this city with unearthly speed, cutting our feet on the razor edges of the pavement.
and i could have loved you if things were different so we kissed untill there was no breath left and we ran on.
the city simmered behind and it spread outward like a wave behind us and turned the forests to dust as we stepped on the soil it turned to glass
the sky never changed so we closed our eyes and let it eat away at us,
ash in our eyelashes and the taste of it in our mouths.
i wore orange embers in my navel, the last dimming star as we trod the ferns and the last shattering flower underfoot in our flight.
forget-me-not.
as we slowed to a walk
our screaming turned to whimpers;
we made the elegant shapes of sex in the dust and the ashes but we were so tired and there was no need.
you told me that it was a matter of moments
we clasped our bloodless hands and made ready.
i never knew your name.
