Title: Time Stands still
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: York/Carolina (mentioned), Wash/CT (implied)
Summary: Even after the fall of Project Freelancer, Wash and York are still there for each other when they need to be.

For Campriot!

“You remember the first time she challenged Tex to hand-to-hand?”

“And Kentucky convinced them that wrestling was the best choice for combat style?” Wash grinned while grabbing himself another beer.

York smiled fondly. “And they had to ditch their armour because it was too restrictive?”

“But neither would back down so they just went with it.” Wash finished. “Yeah, I remember. Wasn’t there, but Maine showed me the vids after. How he got security to give him the surveillance footage I’ll never know.”

Wistful smiles replacing howling laughter, the freelancers sat on makeshift lawn chairs high above the skyline. Getting to the top of the roof had been easy enough; even after the fall of the Project York was still the best damn lockpick out there. Sneaking up an entire cooler of beer had been a challenge.

But they’d managed, and the view was worth it. A few sixpacks and a sunset later the guys had yet to run out of memories to fill the void. Delta made the odd appearance; ‘making an effort to socialize’ he’d claimed. ‘Making sure we haven’t thrown our drunken asses off the edge’ York rebutted.

“You remember that mission we did? Right when Tex got put on our squad?”

Washington groaned into his bottle. “The tower heist?”

York nodded. “After Carolina got separated from us she met up with Tex, right? Never knew what went down between them but we had sex in her room later. ‘Lina’s idea, not mine.”

The other Freelancer doubled over with laughter, pain in his sides growing. “And she never found out?”

Another beer and another smile on York’s part. “She didn’t say anything, but I think she knew.”

“How could you tell?”

“I found Reggie and her in mine a few days after.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah.”

“Wish it’d had been with CT.”

“We can dream, buddy.”

A pause. New York cleared his throat and Wash shifted.

“Carolina’s last shift with Wyoming.” York prompted.

Washington searched through his mind, trying to remember exactly what his friend was referring to. “He hit on her a lot?”

“Every damn shift. But I was used to that.” York took a gulp of his beer. It was empty, he took another and chugged it. “She’d always just ignored it. She was team leader, wanted to stay professional. But that last shift? Looked him right in the visor and said I was more than she’d ever need and he’d have better luck fucking himself.”

York’s smile turned cold as he pulled his gaze away from the skyline and towards the ground. His voice was soft and far away, so unlike his usual self. “David?” He said, disconnected. “My girlfriend just died.”

Wash clasped his hand on his friend’s shoulder. “I know.”

(A/N: I AM SO SORRY TO KILL THE PARTY ;_; I just couldn't end it any other way; knowing that Carolina dies.)
