The Grand Tour gets grander!

Yesterday we spent a few more parking tariff cycles searching for additional Muenster sculptures. We arrived at the salt-lick Sodom petting zoo too early to see the projected videos, but I feel like we captured most of it when the loud-mouth goat licked Lot’s wife a on her hip. We searched by car for several other sculptures, such as the buried church, but to no avail. We did see Klaus Oldenberg’s giant pool balls on drive-by before giving up and hitting the autobahn again. The autobahn was not so much fun this time. There was lots of construction and lots of rain and we were pretty fatigued because our roommate in the hostile woke us up at 03:30 and there was no return to slumber.

We finally made it into Kassel at about 14:00, but our hotel apparently didn’t open registration again until 17:00. So, we went to Ikea and got lost in the store. Seriously, lost. And Chris at a hot dog. We had nowhere else to go, so after we found the way out of the Ikea maze, we went exploring. Did I mention I was tired, oh and hungry? I was in no mood for the mini’s tight gears and touchy clutch on the wet, hilly, windy, and crowded streets of Kassel. Chris wasn’t pleased by my facial expressions. I should have just let her drive, but I was still nervous since that morning 12 years ago when I watched her sideswipe a car from a perfect stop when she thought her car was in reverse and she thought her gas was her brake. We checked into the hotel eventually, discovered they have Internet for lotsa €, and I was able to call my baby on the Skype. woot! The shower here is super hot and super pressurized, so I took a good one and went to sleep.

This morning we woke up later than expected, but just in time. We started to walk to catch the bus and we realized that we didn’t know where the bus stop for 35 was at all. Chris insisted on driving (and thrust her palm-up hand out toward me) for the keys. I’m sure you all know I loved that... So I didn’t give them to her, but started walking back with her behind me. I was annoyed, but I decided to comply. After all, I did get the insurance. I thought it was funny when she put the car in first, looked out the back over her shoulder, and released the e-brake. “Uh.. that’s not reverse.”

She got the hang of it and we made it to the festival in good time.

documenta!!!!! Here are photos! Warning photo people: I haven’t edited them and I think I have too many to try. I’ll think about it later.

documenta XII Day 1

I had no trouble getting student pricing, despite the fact that I only had a printout of my student ID that Christian emailed to me. We had some coffee, loaded up the parking meter, and headed in to Museum Fridericianum. There were so many amazing pieces. I really dig Kerry James Marshall’s paintings and Tanaka Atsuko’s drawings. Zofia Kulik’s multiple exposure photo collages were das ubercool (lolz). I wanna check out this video by Simon Wachsmuth again tomorrow called “Where We Were Then, Where We Are Now.”

Trisha Brown is a superstar with “Floor of the Forest” (check out the pics of the people hanging in the clothes and ropes). Iole de Freitas had this crazy swooping polycarbonate and steel piece that filled a giant room and was even attached outside of the building to give the effect of continuation through the walls.

I can’t even explain how much I enjoyed the day. We thought we had seen most of it until we looked at the program again after getting back to the hotel and realized that there are two more building. Chris went shopping while I talked to Christian on the Skype. All of the regular markets were closed, so she picked us up some reindeer and cheese at Ikea. By the way, people told me I might lose weight on this trip. Chris wins.. her pants fell down today.
