Summary: Thomas Schiff returns to Arkham Asylum
"I believe this is yours," Harvey said icily, thrusting Thomas Schiff towards the flock of orderlies and the single doctor that approached them upon entering Arkham Asylum, Thomas's home away from home. "I'll call Commissioner Gordon and let him know that Mr. Schiff is in your care once more, Doctor...?"
"Leland," she said, "Dr. Joan Leland."
"Miss me, mommy?" Thomas giggled, falling against her shoulder like a toddler who had gone astray and not known he had worried his family so.
Dent nodded tersely. "He'll be wanted for questioning later." He eyed Thomas dangerously, which the schizophrenic recognized as a warning.
"That might take some time, Mr. Dent," said Dr. Leland. "Thomas left our care during the break out six months ago and his regular doctor...is no longer available. We'll need to reassign him before anyone can come here and even then there are procedures to adhere to."
"Procedures!" Thomas shouted as the district attorney was escorted into an office to sign some legal papers regarding Thomas's re-admittance. Somehow Thomas knew that guns in a dark alley were not part of the kind of procedures Dr. Leland was talking about.
After spending forty-five minutes coercing Thomas into exchanging his stolen honor guard uniform, bagging it into a plastic sheath to give to Dent for evidence and waiting for him to change into the Arkham jumpsuit, Dr. Leland was ready to reintroduce Thomas to Arkham.
They entered the dreary common room and waited at the nurse's station while Dr. Leland informed the head nurse and guard of Thomas's unexpected arrival. She then turned to Thomas. "Thomas, I'm going to have you wait in the common room while I get a room ready and then we'll find you a new doctor to start seeing. Do you remember the rules for the common room?"
"Yes, yes," Thomas nodded eagerly, spotting a familiar figure lounging on the couch, lazily watching the news, still focused on the fiasco at Commissioner Loeb's funeral. She let him go and he crawled on all fours over to the couch, watching the blue eyed man stare up at the screen. He must have felt Thomas's stare because he abruptly turned around to see Thomas kneeling behind him. A smile broke out on his face.
"What are you doing here?" Jonathan Crane asked in disbelief, sitting up. Thomas joined him on the couch and threw his arms around the psychiatrist turned patient.
"I just had to see you, Dr. Crane," Thomas said, his dark eyes glossy and unfocused.
Crane smirked and touched Thomas's nose playfully. "And just what did I tell you about playing with psychotic clowns?"
"That they'd just send me right back to Arkham," replied Thomas dutifully.
"See, I was right. Here you are."
Thomas grinned. "With you, Dr. Crane."
"You know Thomas, technically speaking, I'm not a doctor anymore."
"You'll always be Dr. Crane to me."
Jonathan smiled knowingly in response as he sat back to back with Thomas and continued to watch television in contented silence.

NOTES:
- Wrote this for the
batfic_contest theme Crush. I wanted to take a break from Harley & Joker and do something a little different. So this was written instead. Has absolutely no connection to the fics I write other than my 2nd OTP. Is that an oxymoron? To have two OTP's? Oh, well.
