I had wonderful soul food on Sunday evening. My friend used the Urban Spoon app for her iPhone after we visited the Asian Art Museum and it came up with
farmerbrown. It's a swanky little restaurant at Market and Mason. The atmosphere is swanky but has a definite "barn" flavor to it. The staff, particularly Darrin, was friendly, helpful, attentive, and kind.
The four of us opted to go family style. We started with the typical on-the-table water infused with cucumber slices (yum) and appetizer of mini cornbread muffins and sweet butter. I held off on the jalapeno sauce though it smelled great! Our formal appetizer was the sweet potato steak fries with aioli - the aioli went well on the cornbread, too! We then shared the vegetable jambalaya; crispy cornmeal catfish with candied yams and green beans; and grilled pork tenderloin with some kind of neat cabbage, squash, and walnut side. As a dessert, we opted for their bread pudding, splitting one piece... except two showed up compliments of our server (yes, he got a good tip)! To try to pick a favorite from the overall meal would be impossible. It was ALL good exceptional!!!
Conclusion - if you're in San Francisco, consider soul food and try
farmerbrown!
