That was wonderful. I enjoyed the talk and the fact of what Sam was saying of not knowing what is real and that Dean as his stone number one he can't trust now. Wow.
I agree, Dean did let him go and that was what was haunting Dean (in the opening sequence of season 6 he wakes up with what I think of a haunted look on his face - so much pain and despair - even Lisa asked if he was okay). I can see why Dean just couldn't let him go again, and Sam did have the option to not stop the trial and give Crowley the fist sandwich but he truly would listen to Dean.
This kind of makes more sense looking at it this way - the fact when Sam was standing in the laboratory and Crowley said to him "you are truly alone". Sam didn't have his stone number 1 any longer and he had no idea what happened. To me, Sam probably thought that Dean and Castiel went to heaven. Since he didn't have his stone number one - he just drove and hit a dog meeting Dr vet. That makes more of a logical stand with the idea here; that Sam was just as lost and haunted as Dean was in the beginning of season 6.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was therapeutic to write, haha. I think you're absolutely right that Sam thought Dean and Cas were dead, and he's not about to try to pull Dean out of Heaven, where he's probably happy with his memories of a young kid Sam who hadn't yet betrayed or disappointed him. All he can do at that point is try to soldier on, keep it together, and then he hits a dog, as you say.
Yeah I always saw Dean as a kind of brittle man at the beginning of season six. He laughed, smiled, had fun with Lisa and Ben, cookouts and golf or whatever, but you get the best picture of him when no one is looking at him, when he's awake in bed.

Thank you so much for sharing.
