Opening Ceremonies: 12 minutes to the torch

Feb 12, 2010 21:06

The entrance of the Olympic flag, carried by Mama Fox, Donald Sutherland (looking sharp), Jacque Villenueve, Barbara Ann Scott, Anne Murray, Romeo Dalliere (yay!), Bobby Orr, and Julie Piette. The Olympic hymn is being sung by an opera singer, and she is rocking it. It is one of the great disappointments of my life that I cannot sing like that.

And now a moment of silence for the Georgian luger. Not a good start to the games. Apparently, it has been carnage on the track, due to its speed.

And now, happy music!

The Olympic Oath promises that the athletes will compete without doping. It would seem the Russians have already broken that part of the oath. Maybe something got lost in translation.

Inspiring montage set to French music. For some reason, t.ere apprear to be urchins huddling behind him. It is c'est beau.

And at last, here comes the torch, carried by Rick Hanson! Once inside, he hands it off to Catriona Le May Doan, who passes it to Steve Nash, who passes it to Nancy Greene, who passes it to the Gretzky, for the victory lap. But who will light the cauldron? It's....it's....all of them! Or it was supposed to be! But some of the pieces of the cauldron got stuck. Awkward.

And that's the Opening Ceremonies! Which means it's time to feed the cats. They do not care about sportsmanship, they want dinner.

ETA: Gretzky gets to light the external cauldron. Wayne is stanking in the airlock with the torch. And now he's trotting down to the car to take him to the waterfront. And it's raining. Don't let the torch go out, Wayne! And then Brian Williams brings up the Nazis, because he is Brian Williams. He just has to rain on the parade, even when it's already raining.

I'm trying to figure out where they're going. They're on Robson Street, apparently heading towards the "waterfront". Where? And now they've arrived...somewhere, and holy crap for a moment it looked like it wasn't going to light. That would have been embarassing.

And now I'm done.
