Ok, so this is on the website (www.uwo.ca) main page today
In Memoriam Mar 4th, 2005
The flag will be at half-mast on today from 8 a.m. until noon in memory of Ms. Elizabeth Callcott, a retired staff member from the Bookstore with 13 years of service.
The flag is also at half-mast in memory of student Andrew Barnes, who passed away on February 15, 2005.
Ok, at first nothing unusual, as there seem to be In Memoriam's at least once a week for some loosely affiliated person who's died. What bugs me is the blurb about the student. I don't think i knew him, but that's neither here nor there.
So I may not know the truth behind everything but on face value, it seems kinda cold. Andrew is only identified as a "student" when the least they could have done was told us what program he was in or something more to make it seem like they at least CARED about him.
Also, if he died OVER two weeks ago, why only mention it now. Is the loss of a student only worth enough to them to be mentioned IN PASSING once they have some OTHER reason to lower the flag and write up a notice???? Would it debase them so to actually lower the flag for a student's death???? But apparently the crazy amounts of money they whore out of us isn't enough to make us important to them.
If there were some sort of circumstance, like they only learned of it now (which seems doubtful) then at least they could have gave him his own day, or else at least provide him a decent write up or possibly explain why it's so late...
