On Wednesday, I headed up to Deer Creek for the first of two Phish shows. After settling into our campsite, which was about four miles away from the venue, my companions and I began to walk the long walk to the venue, thinking our buddies Tyler G. and Jerod W. would pick us up...we didn't expect to walk the whole way. Due to unforseeable circumstances, Tyler G. and Jerod W. were not able to find us on the road. We began sticking our thumbs out...finally, a dude stopped and we hitched a ride to the venue. We found a nice spot up on the lawn and sat down to wait. Soon, everyone stood up and strained to see the stage...apparently something was happening. When the 4 members of Phish stepped out on stage, the crowd erupted in noise. It was awesome. Seconds later, Fishman went crazy on the drums to start the set off with "Llama". The second he hit those drums, 24,000 people started dancing and convulsing in crazy crazy ways. Awesome. Here is the setlist from Wednesday night.
Set 1: Llama, Bouncing Around The Room, Bathtub Gin, Ya Mar, Pebbles and Marbles, Army of One, Split Open and Melt
Set 2: Halley's Comet > Crosseyed and Painless > Slave to the Traffic Light, Nothing > 46 Days > Scents and Subtle Sounds > Brian and Robert > Limb by Limb > Cavern, E: Waste
The "Bathtub Gin" was freaking sick...well, pretty much the whole show was. "Halley's Comet" to start off the second set was awesome. The whole lawn erupted with glowsticks...tons of em just flying through the air as Trey sang the whimsical "Halley's Comet". After that, the segue into the Talking Heads song "Crosseyed and Painless" and then into "Slave to the Traffic Light" was awesome..."46 Days" made me dance extra hard (which isn't that hard, for me) and the encore was a nice choice. Overall, a very awesome night. But then, there was the second night.
I had seat in row L in Sec. A of the lower pavilion, which means I was right by the stage, but to the left a bit. I could see everyone perfectly. The setlist for Thursday night was this:
Set 1: Loving Cup, Cities > Back On the Train, Vultures, My Mind's Got a Mind of its Own, Down with Disease > Rock and Roll
Set 2: Tube, Run Like an Antelope, The Wedge, Timber Ho, Prince Caspian > Simple, Walls Of the Cave, E: Squirming Coil
Great set one, with the highlight for me being the "Down with Disease > Rock and Roll" Just wow. Then, the second set. I seriously think that this set was the best music I have ever heard. "Run Like an Antelope" was amazing and so fun. And then, WOW..."Prince Caspian > Simple" Great, great, great, great stuff. I loved the "Squirming Coil" encore. A great, great night. Phish will be sorely missed by me. I am very sad that I may never get to see them again. However, I am very grateful for these two incredible nights of music. Phish rocks, listen to them. I'm out.
Oh yeah, I forgot. Fishman wore the dress. Both nights. Awesome.
