I attended my first 2 events today and I'm going to use my unemployed out of school free time to go to as many more as I can manage. It's sooper fun to bike with a posse of cyclists though our fair city. Today I went on the 9-5 ride with 4 others where we managed to miss the rain by being under shelter at the firehouse museum on 35th and Belmont and then at the end of the ride at Fire On The Mountain on N. Interstate and Skidmore.
Then it was the potluck where we started at the Alberta Co-op Grocery and with around 10 cyclists rode out mostly on Alameda, a wide, smooth, low traffic road with newly painted bike route symbols to a park with a covered picnic area on Glisan and 82nd. Part of the group were 2 members of
Midnight Ridazz from LA who were bedazzled by Portland's biking infrastructure. Most of the group then took off further East to a bar, but I decided to head back North and ended up being a Vélo City guide back to the starting point for our guests from the South. We got blasted by another dose of this crazy unseasonal rain, but we warmed up by bombing UPhill by which time the rain subsided and granted us a beautiful view of the waxing lunar crescent in the West. They never would have found their way back without a guide and I was happy to serve. They were great company. I plan to attend the Midnight Ridazz pLAyland ride on Thursday night, starting at Pioneer Courthouse Square- start meeting at 9, ride at 10.
I only discovered that this Pedalpalooza thing was happening yesterday and I'm way excited after 3 months of biking and only one trip so far with more than one biking buddy to have found such a wide array of events that are basically social mixers for Portland's biking community to meet one another. Strength in numbers...biking with a group rocks. I'm soooo glad I finally got some human-powered wheels. Eventually we'll make this city as bike (and cannabis!) friendly as Amsterdam. So mote it be!
