firefly notes
Mainly for my own use, I've got lists of different specific character interactions in Firefly. I noted these down in my last re-watch because of the gifsets I was/am making on tumblr but have already made the sets for these so don't really need the info. Might aswell jot down it all down here in case I need to use it in the future? Under the cut because it's quite long. (Includes: Kaylee/Inara interaction, Kaylee/Malcolm interaction, Simon/River interaction)

- They walk back together after Inara talks to the preacher in the hold, Kaylee says "How many wanted to take you away from all of this?" and Inara says "None, I think I'm slipping."
- When Kaylee gets shot, Inara shouts out her name and goes to her aid.
- Near the end of the episode in her living space Inara tells Simon "Kaylee's very dear to us all."
- Inara brushes Kaylee's hair and tells her that it is "lovely" and that Simon would like it. They discuss Inara's clients, and it is also said that she brushes her client's hair like she does with Kaylee.
- Later on there are shots of them standing near each other in the cargo hold as Malcolm talks.
- When they are at the ball, Inara comments that Kaylee "looks adorable" to Malcolm as they dance.
- When Inara and Malcolm talk at the end of the episode sitting on the balcony to the cargo hold, Inara jokingly justifies her staying on the ship with "someone has to keep Kaylee out of trouble."
- In the store there they talk about a wooden duck they see. And they leave together when Simon offends Kaylee with something he says.
- When Inara is going to see a client, Kaylee calls out "Have good sex!"
- Near the start of the episode, the first shot is them playing cards together in the kitchen.
- They talk and laugh on the balcony of the cargo hold. Inara kisses Kaylee's cheek and tells her to "stay out of trouble" like she said to Malcolm a few episodes ago.
- They again talk later on on the balcony after the events of the episode.
- When they are at the market Inara pulls Kaylee to her side in a sort of hug and comforts her about Simon offending her again.
- When Malcolm is talking to Inara through a video feed he says that Kaylee has been "missing her something feirce" and Inara says that she has missed her too.
Kaylee/Malcolm
1x01:
- Near the beginning in the cargo hold Malcolm says to Jayne that there "isn't a power in the verse to stop Kaylee from being cheerful" but he wishes he could throw her down into the basement sometimes. Kaylee smiles, kisses his cheek and tells him genuinely that she "loves her captain."
- When they're eating in the kitchen, Jayne makes some snide remarks about Kaylee's kindess to Simon and Malcolm tells him to leave the table.
- Kaylee gets shot and Malcolm only decides to do what Simon says if he agrees to get her to medical attention.
- Malcolm goes to see Kaylee in the medical room when she wakes up. They hold hands and she says that he's a "nice man, always looking out for us" and that he "just needs to have faith in people." He seems really worried about her by his expression and uncharacteristic tenderness.
- After Malcolm says something Kaylee comments "that was real pretty, captain."
- When Kaylee is admiring a dress in a store Malcolm says that she'd look stupid wearing it and she walks off offended. He seems upset that he accidentally hurt her feelings.
- Later on, Malcolm goes to see Kaylee and apologises and tells her to come with him. It turns out he has gone to buy her the dress and they go to the ball together hand in hand. She refers to him as "captain tight pants." She leaves to go and get strawberries but asks before she goes and he reluctantly lets her.
- Malcolm and Inara dance together and when she says that Kaylee looks adorable Malcolm agrees with her.
- When Kaylee hears about Malcolm's surprise marriage she says "you got married?" very excitedly.
- In the same scene, she hugs the wife comfortingly and says "oh sweetie don't feel bad he makes everyone cry, he's a monster" in regards to Malcolm.
- At the end of the episode Malcolm kisses Kaylee on the head in the pilot's part of the ship and says "you're still the best mechanic floating."
- When they're at the pub in the town, Malcolm wants Kaylee to go and do something but she tells him that she's getting it on with Simon and he smiles and agrees to let her stay. She pats his hand and smiles lovingly before he leaves.
- The next day - or what appears to be a number of hours - Kaylee and Malcolm leave the pub together after Simon offends her.
- When Jayne is talking to the crowd they stand next to each other.
- Kaylee watches a hurt Zoe through the window of the medical room. Malcolm goes and comforts her and speaks to her very kindly despite how assertive he is with everyone else in this episode. He tells her to go and try to fix the ship and she agrees and he says "that's a good girl."
- He goes to see her yet again to see how she's doing and she talks about how sad she is and he puts an arm around her as he tries to encourage her to keep trying to fix the ship.
- We see them meeting in the flashback. They meet via him walking in on her having sex with the male mechanic in the workroom. When she starts talking about mechanics etc he tilts his head in wonder at her. And then he offers her a job on the spot for the ship, she's really excited about it and runs out to go and tell her family.
- Back in the real time period, when he says that he's going to stay on the ship despite how he will likely die Kaylee intervenes with "Captain.."
- When Malcolm wakes up in the medical room at the end of the episode she says "Hey captain, you fixed the ship. Good work." He replies with "Thaaaaanks" all drawn out with a sleepy smile to match hers.
- Nearish the end of the episode he puts his arm around her and sort of hugs her while rocking side to side a bit as he talks to the other people.
- When Kaylee admits that River was the one who killed the men a few episodes ago Malcolm puts an arm around her and says "I ain't got no problem with you killin' nobody Kaylee."
Simon/River
1x01:
- When the box she was being kept in is opened he hugs her, she says "Simon?" and he tells her it's okay and hugs her. Tells the group that she's his sister.
- He then gives a speech to the rest of the group in the kitchen explaining how he went to save River by throwing away his career, family, and life when he thought that something was wrong. We see flashes of him administering medication to her, holding her hand as she lays on the medical room, etc as she sleeps. A line from the speech I liked - "She wasn't just gifted, she was a gift."
- Near the end of the episode he is putting her to bed in their lodgings. He gives her medication to help her sleep. She says "I didn't think you'd come for me" and he replies with "well, you're a dummy" and they smile.
- They talk in the medical room when she freaks out and he makes her feel better.
- When she starts crying he comforts her and says "it's okay, I'm here."
- To hide from the alliance they are on the outside of the ship in spacesuits. She looks amazed at the stars/night sky but he refuses to look at it and looks upset with it. He watches her amazement with confusion.
- River rips up loads of papers from cans in the kitchen. He holds her and tells her it's okay.
- At the start of the episode there are flashbacks of them playing as children in their home.
- When they are in the town, Simon is really protective of her and doesn't let her touch anything. Then she escapes and Simon finally finds her dancing in some kind of fair event with loads of people happily. He smiles as he watches her.
- There's another flashback focused on him when he tells their parents that he thinks that something bad has happened to River as she has sent him coded/uncharacteristic letters. They don't believe him but he knows her well enough to know something is wrong.
- They are kidnapped by men together and he keeps reassuring her that they will be okay when she looks distressed.
- When they are in the medical room for the town there she disappears and he is worried. She then comes back with berries and feeds them to him. (In a weirdly intimate way.) She reminds him of a memory they had together doing the same thing as children. She then says she feels guilty because he "gave up everything he had" but he replies with "everything I have is right here" and cups her face as she says this.
- The villagers think that River is a witch and decide to burn her to the stake. Simon tries to reason with them but fails. When he realises he can't save her, he climbs up onto the stake and holds onto her tightly. He would rather be burned alive with her than have her die alone possibly, or he can't imagine a life where she is dead. Either way he decides to die with her before they are saved by the crew.
- When Simon is telling a story at the dinner table River smiles.
- Simon tells River that she has to eat.
- When they are in the cabin their faces are very very close, kissing distance, and she tells her that everything will be fine if they take the pills.
- Later on in the hospital Simon saves a patient and River smiles as she watches.
- When they are going through the hospital he constantly reassures her that things will be okay and holds hands etc.
- Later on in the cabin she is doing drawings and he is happy that she is happy. He gives her the medicine, they talk, etc. They smile and hold hands.
- In the cabin he hugs her with a blanket and says "you are my beautiful sister."
- Simon and River have another standard scene in the cabin.
- Simon agrees to help the bounty hunter find River but does it reluctantly. River had hidden because she didn't want to but Simon under the strain of looking after her any more. When she is talking and pretending she is the ship he says to the hunter, "my sister's a ship. We had a complicated childhood."
- **Movie spoilers** They have LOTS of moments in the movie as it's basically all about her but the main one is where he gets shot and apologies profusely to her about it. She says "you've always taken care of me. it's my turn" before killing all of the bad guys outside of the room.
