Sick Man Walking

My new Japanese uncle-in-law Ojisan (which is uncle in Japanese - his real name is Yasuhiko-san) gifted me last week with a pedometer (and if you're reading this, ojisan, domo arigato gozaimasu), the Yamasa Skeletone Digi-Walker EM-180, a gadget from Japan that measures the steps that you take in a walk or jog. You clip it onto your belt or shorts, press the reset button to turn it back to zero, and off you go! Perfect for someone like me with my new-fangled medical condition. According to the manual (in Nihonggo) the best was to be able to walk at least 10,000 steps in a session. At least. Argh.

The other day I clipped it onto my belt before I left for work, and forgot about it. My day that day was commuting (find a cab, MRT, walk, jeepney ride, walk) from Quezon City to Pasong Tamo, a full day of walking around the office, a quick trip to Greenbelt 3 for a presscon, then going back to the office from more walking from table to table, then finally commuting the other way back home. When I checked the Digi-Walker it read 3200. Jeez.

This morning I spent an full hour walking around the neighborhood, and by the time I got home I was exhausted and perspiring like slave labor in a Calcutta sweatshop in summer, my legs quivering from the effort. 8500 steps.

Damn.

Where do the Japanese get their energy? And more to the point, where do they go? 10,000 steps? Sheesh.

Gotta get me a treadmill.
