Fate, Danger, and Love- Mild R (mature situations) - Arthur, Gwen-Theme IV: Harmony

Part IV: Fast and Smooth

When she reentered the front room, Arthur was standing at the window quietly with Burt Bacharach playing in the background. She supposed even MI5 agents needed a harmonic break which her stomach was feeling now that it finally had food in it. Walking over, Gwen smoothed back a fallen blonde hair from his forehead.

“Thank you.”

“Pleasure.” She whispered.

“So not still longing to go home?”

Gwen let out a sigh, telling him the whole sordid truth of her lost job and late paid rent, even the awfulness of what Lance did to her.

Arthur tipped her chin afterward, stating resolutely, “His failing.”

“Exactly. Why I dumped him.”

Arthur’s smile was so deep that it made his nose scrunch up. She thought it was sort of adorable on a man who could drive a speeding car with swerving finesse and knew too how to shoot a gun well enough to kill a guy if needed. Such a weird contraction of desire, but then she always craved excitement more than boredom.

He leaned against the window’s wide sill, resting his arm to meet her at better eye level. “You ran away from me earlier. No doubt, thought I was someone dangerous.”

“Yes.” Gwen admitted.

“But you didn’t give the bomb to Mordred. Even after he threatened you.”

Gwen’s eyes filled with shock. “How did you know that?”

Arthur shrugged, reaching out to touch one of her dark curls of hair. “When I slipped the bomb in your pocket I also slipped a tracking device attached to it, less than the size of a button so you didn’t see it. I knew I was putting you in danger, so I wanted to keep tabs on your whereabouts. Even after you kicked me hard enough in the shin to bruise it.”

“Sorry. But you grabbed me so fast.”

“I know.”

“You told me to shut it.”

Arthur sighed. “Wasn’t very chivalrous of me.”

“Not at all.” Gwen agreed.

He smiled softly, pressing his lips against her hand. “Sorry milady.”

Gwen laughed.

Arthur had more to say though, as he now reached out to Gwen’s waist. “I really didn’t want to put you in danger, but there was something about your face. You see I had a split second Guinevere to pick a person. In my line of work we’re taught how to spot criminals and people who are just innocently doing their own thing. It was more than that though with you. Something about you felt very sincere and brave too.”

“Me, brave?” Gwen gestured to her chest with a laugh, but Arthur caught her hand, his eyes serious.

“Yes. You. Brave.”

The way he said that made her stomach do a little flip, not from hunger, but something else entirely.

“One second and you seemed the right choice. Of course you started fighting me and so I had to play up the game that I was nothing more than an attacker. You wouldn’t listen to me anyway. And then I could spot them coming. You were running away and I just had one more second to slip it into your pocket, hoping you didn’t find out until I found you again. Meanwhile I ran for the last car, got in right before it closed. I tried to get up to where you two were. But it was a short way to the next stop. By the time I was reaching the right car the train was stopping.”

“And you heard me get out?”

“Yeah. And in the background I heard them following you. I just don’t get it.”

“What?” Gwen asked with a frown.

“After Mordred’s threat you didn’t just give it to him.”

Gwen nodded, admitting it, “I felt uncomfortable with him. I mean he’s very handsome.”

Arthur smiled. “Oh yes. Can charm a woman better than Gwaine…before he kills them.”

“Really…Mordred’s done that?”

Arthur nodded heavily. “I was right to trust you. And you were right to not trust him.”

Gwen sighed lazily at the continued wonderful sounds of Burt Bacharach. “King of smooth.”

“Agreed.”

“Smoother than your dress.” She stated boldly, before biting back her tongue.
