"Merlin! What have I told you about . . ." she began.

Gwen's eyes widened and she almost swallowed her tongue . . . it really wasn't Merlin. It was worse. Significantly worse. Her eyes rose that a little bit higher to meet her visitor's cool gaze. She couldn't help the little murmur of shock that passed her lips, before she found her voice again. "My lord!" she squeaked.

Arthur frowned and started forward.

Sensing the movement, Gwen simultaneously gave Arthur a firmer push further behind the safety of the door, and looked out into the night. The King was alone, and her heart was beating far too quickly for her to tell if that was a good thing or a bad thing. Though it did seem to mean he didn't plan on having her dragged off to the dungeons . . . as he was hardly going to drag her himself.

She started to picture it, before snapping herself out of it. She needed to focus.

Insanely, she suddenly realised was out of biscuits, as Merlin had eaten them all at lunch and now she had no biscuits to offer the King WHO SHOULD NOT KNOW ( ... )

Gwen stared at Arthur for a moment, not really knowing what to say. How did he manage to go out the back of the house, get to the street again and get to ger door without either her or Uther noticing the movement behind the curtains ( ... )

"That is none of your concern" Uther said firmly but gently. He wasn't patronisingly blocking him out, but simply excluding him. It made Arthur feel rotten to the core. He knew he was about to get his marching orders and he did. "I shall speak to you when I have returned to the castle."

Arthur stood there for a second. Although he had been expecting it he didn't know how to move from his spot. It was like he was physically attached to the hut's floor, or physically attached to Gwen.

He chuckled nervously again. "Are you sure you don't want me to stay? I might be useful in whatever questions you want to ask--"

"I am quite sure" Uther interrupted, cutting him off.

Arthur stood there silently. He had been hoping that maybe the king had wanted to ask her about Morgana's disappearance but that still didn't explain to Arthur why Uther would come to Gwen's house! He would have just summoned her before the court to testify to whatever it was, and even if he didn't he would not have objected to Arthur being present as he and the army were ( ... )

Uther steepled his fingers, the rose caught between them. “I’ve been considering your proposal.”

“My . . .” the air went out of Gwen’s lungs. Her foot started to nervously tap under the table. “Oh.”

Something flashed across Uther’s face too quickly for Gwen to identify it. “You have changed your mind?” The King leant back, dropping the rose to the tabletop, dismissively.

“No.” Of course not.

She glanced fleetingly back at the curtain. She hadn’t been game enough to offer her idea to either of the men in her life, knowing how quickly they’d shoot her down. Knowing that they’d both get that look that had previously been reserved solely for Morgana ( ... )

Arthur looked at her.

"In regards to what?" he asked with a shrug of his shoulders. "And for the record I do not tell Merlin everything. I rarely tell him anything."

"If you say so."

"Anything he has ever got out of me, he pried from me by being infuriatingly irritatingGwen chuckled quietly. "Alright I believe you! I didn't tell Merlin because I didn't think it would ever come to anything. It's not every day the king pays heed to something a servant tells them ( ... )
