Stuff I watched this weekend

Pints of ice cream (Americone Dream!) consumed this weekend: Two.
Work done: Zilch!
DVDs watched this weekend:

1. Fingersmith (2005)

This is the 3-hour BBC miniseries based on the novel by Sarah Waters, about a thief from the slums who falls in love with the rich lady she was supposed to swindle. I was luckily unspoiled for this, so the plot twists kept me on the edge of my seat. More than 'just a lesbian romance' (although the love scenes killed me with their tenderness) this is overall really, really good, and absolutely satisfying to watch.

2. Revolutionary Road (2008)

So. I wanted to see this because (1) Kate Winslet ♥ and (b) I was intrigued by a review of Richard Yates's novel, describing it as the brilliant masterpiece of an unapologetic misogynist who somehow managed to create a 'proto-feminist' in Kate's character, and who captured the sense of suffocation, the desperation of these women, and the heartache. Having said that, holy dumb idea batman why, WHY did I think this was a good idea? No complaints about the acting, I loved the soundtrack, but the film itself is way bleak.

3. Generation Kill (2008)
I'm finally going to watch Generation Kill, partly to wash away the aftertaste of Revolutionary Road. Somebody please warn me if this will break my heart!

If all else fails, I'll have to turn to ontd_startrek for the cheering up. Desperate? Hell yes.
