News Notes

I was driving to work today behind this idiot in a truck who kept tapping his breaks in quick succession. I was irritated because you gauge your speed down a hill by the cars in front of you and by their break lights. But when some twerp is tap dancing on his breaks, you don't know what to do (certainly not emulate that behavior). Well, here's the silver lining: we pulled up to a stop light and what does he do? Takes out a saxophone and starts playing. WTF?! Then he continues to play as he drives further down Washington St. I've seen drummers with sticks beating their steering wheels, but never a saxophonist.

I bought a camera recently and I had a bout of buyer's remorse. You know, I used to be a camera store manager and I know a lot about the little beasties. And here's what I know now: the camera I want does not exist yet. Darnit. I was thinking of returning my new Nikon for a Panasonic with a super-zoom, but the image quality just didn't cut it. Let's face it, brand name does count for something and Nikon produces great, vivid images. I know that Sony makes some of their sensors, so I looked at their products (which were not the best products four years ago, but my friend Ewa bought one and I trust her judgement) and there seems to be a contender, but it won't be released until after the honeymoon. So after taking a couple more shots with my new Nikon P5100, I'm going to keep it. Huzzah!

I also bought a Western Digital 1TB external hard-drive for our CD collection and back-up for Morocco. I intend to leave a back-up of all our data in South Carolina and in San Diego. There are all these things I want to take care of and I'm worried about: like setting up my folks as power of attorney, where should I send my mail, car registration: I want to change it to S. Carolina for residency, but then it's going to be illin' in San Diego for a year-and-a-half while I'm out of the country? It turns into a whole: let's depend on the parents and not be independent. Poop. But I really don't see a better alternative than using the services of dear ole Ma and Pa, although I hate asking. They've already thought about having a POD in the backyard, but I vetoed that. I have to rent a truck to take my things out there for the first six months in SC so why bring it all back when I could just store it there? The key is to make friends who will stay in Columbia and can check in on stuff for me if I need it. Otherwise, I could move out to SC with minimal stuff and not take a truck (i.e. no furniture) and live in a furnished apartment for 6 mos. but that's not really realistic.

Anyway, that's what I've been up to in a nutshell. Oh, and ever since I found out that I didn't have to do my Statistics homework on time, I've been not doing it at all and that has to change since I have a test on Sunday. Whoops. But I work Saturday! Double whoops. In the immortal words of Tim Gunn, "[I'll] Make it work."
