Ship Wars fics

I wrote two fics for the bsg-epics Ship War that I never ended up posting to my journal. Realized I wanted to have them for reference, so here they are:

Legacy, a Roslin/Zarek fic set on New Caprica (T, 150 words)

When future generations of children sat, years from now, in a brick-and-mortar building that would replace the tent where she’d once taught, Laura wondered what teachers would tell their students about the last President of the Colonies, and the first Presidents of the planet where humanity’s remains had settled.

Would she be remembered for helping the struggling planet make an honest go of it, saving a barely functioning civilian government from Gaius Baltar’s dereliction? Or would people sneer about the schoolteacher who’d slept her way to the top, not once but twice?

If only Adama had just let her steal the election, she thought for the umpteenth time, as the Admiral led the settlers in applause for the newly inaugurated Second President of New Caprica.

She squeezed Tom’s hand and took a deep breath before ascending to the dais, arm-in-arm with the Vice President, to address her people.

Homecoming, an Adama/Roslin fic set in newnumbertwo's Ikeaverse (K, 310 words)

“Laura, what’s wrong?” Bill noticed that his wife’s mouth had drawn into a thin line, her shoulders tense.

She looked up from trailing her fingers over their baby’s downy, dark hair. Judith yawned and stretched in her mother’s arms.

“Are they really going to let us take her home?” she asked in a whisper, looking around the waiting room as if she expected the nurses to come take the baby back to the nursery.

Bill tried not to laugh. “Yeah, sweetheart. We made her, we have to keep her.”

“But I don’t know anything about taking care of a baby!” Laura was quickly progressing from tense to panicked.

A loud honk sounded from the ambulance entrance to the hospital. Kara sat behind the wheel of Bill’s old Taurus wagon, grinning and waving wildly at them through the double set of sliding glass doors.

He stood up, taking the baby from Laura and bucking the infant into the carrier that would double as a car seat. He picked up the carrier in one hand and slung Laura’s bag over his shoulder before holding out out the other hand to help Laura up from her chair.

“You didn’t know anything about teaching, once,” he reminded her. “But you learned. Just like we will learn how to take care of her. Together.”

She gave him a watery smile. “Together.”

Kara got out of the car and rushed to them once they reached the sidewalk, opening the passenger door and making sure Judith’s carrier locked properly into the plastic base.

Bill helped Laura into the backseat, next to their daughter. Deep blue eyes turned to her parents, sleepily evaluating them through half-closed lids. Kara looked back at the three of them from the front seat and smiled, before reaching for the CD player to queue up Baby Einstein.

“And we have help,” he added.
