Terry Giliam's new[ish] movie Tideland is one fo the best things I've seen in a long time.
There are some conceptual similarities between it and
Pan's Labrynth that could cause someone who liked one to like the other, yet one tells of a girl finding a new world full of farytale rules bereft of choice and set to destiny, the other shows a world inside a young girl's mind as she alone can see it; a world not yet tainted by the views we hold to be truth, nor bound by anything but what comes to be.
The movie, however, found little love from the main stream. In fact, it found little love from anyone at all. Expecting to find rich reviews touting his relapse into brilliance since his failure with The Brothers Grimm, I dug for something worthy of showing you, worthy of exhibiting as representative of why you too should see this film. This is a quote from one of the most positive reviews I found: "Gilliam’s brash disregard for conventional narrative rhythms and structures is one of the many thrills of his best work, but here his freewheeling navigations veer so far off-road that the passenger is left exhausted and bewildered, not least by the blasts of literally flatulent humour." Jessica Winter Time Out London Issue 1877: August 9-16 2006
Below is a video of Terry Gilliam using age old methods of fund raising seldom seen in the film industry, while promoting his dually reviled film.
It's a sad day when people just don't get it, however, today I think, is cause for celebration because it shows that someone's actually able to get something done DESPITE the audience, meaning that there's stuff out there for the fringe who will appreciate it.
A wonderful thing indeed. Furthermore, although the reviewers couldn't fail to trash it cause it's their reputation on the line, the netflix reviews were solid. I'll bet IMDB has a few good ones too. Anyway, it's not about the reviews and that's the point. It's good despite the audience, and that's a rare thing to find.
The Intro to the movie is a little warning,
advising you to be in the right mindset or
the movie will be lost on you.
Honestly, I think most people who aren't
going to like it just won't and the warning
can only hope to function as a reminder
that this movie was intended only to reach
certain ears, so don't bother making a
stink about it if you don't like it.
Terry did an
interesting interview with fans via the web, and many other things can be found at the
official website.
