bonnaroo, bonnaroo, bonnaroo

i'm going to do a quick re-cap of my experience at bonnaroo. please note, it was the time of my life, SO FAR! haha

getting there was pretty easy. we had a run-ins with enormous crucifixes, homes on wheels, quite a few bonnaroo-goers, rebel mack trucks, and beautiful landscapes. we rolled in to wal-mart around 7pm and hung out. found some E and did our thing. the gates opened around 11pm that night, so we got right in and we were in the second lot, "oddjob camp". we made friends right off the bat. our neighbors were awesome(sam, carolin, steve-o, even, richelle, and i don't remember the rest). our camp was set up in 5 minutes, otherwise it would have been taken over by the 100 people around us. socializing comes so natural in an environment like that. i helped the girls next door set up their canopy. and everyone gave us props on being completely prepared for the event. it was relieving, in a way, because we really didn't know what to expect. we were totally prepared with food, ice, housing...fucking everything. i don't think i'd do too much different next year. VIP is probably the only thing we were missing. showers were 7 dollars otherwise, and you also get free food. PRET-ty sick. anyway..the first night, hanging out with everyone, this wave of hooting and hollering and "BONNAROOOOO!!!" came rolling over the masses of people that got in that night...Kevin best described it as us all getting ready for battle. it got us all wicked amped. i think we hit the sack around 2 or 3 and were up for 8am the next morning.

the venue was empty on thursday compared to the flood of people that took over the 700-acre farm the rest of the weekend. we got intimate with what made wilwaukee famous, superdrag, and MGMT. i skipped Battles and Vampire Weekend because i was pretty exhausted and Ash and i lost Jen and Kevin. we headed back to camp while Jen and Kev caught Battles and headed back to meet up with us. we spent the rest of the night getting high out of our minds. silver and purple haze mixed into one bud...it was beautiful. lol.

friday was minus the bear, !!!, M.I.A.(her final show before booking off to record her third album, due out in probably a couple of years. shes tedious with her work, and i love her for it. she travels all over the world recording; africa, sri lanka, the U.S., london, everywhere.) that triple threat was probably the best string of shows i saw all weekend. the crowds were SICK, and i wish i stuck it out in M.I.A.'s PSYCHOTIC crowd, but Craig's bookbag kicked the bucket(straps broke off every hinge) and i headed out. me and Jen just jammed on the outskirts. there were people busting out of that stage by 20-80 feet. i wish i got some video of her, she puts on a damn good show. later that night was Chris Rock's stand-up. he was hysterical. and then Metallica, who i didn't stick around for, had a boring crowd. everyone was so beat from being in the sun all day. i called Mark on my way back over to see Superjam, while they were playing 'One'. i got to Superjam with Jen around 11, and slept under the tent for an hour...then Jen wanted to leave so i missed it. GRRR!! it ended up being Gogol Bordello, Les Claypool, and some dude from Metallica that came over after their set, and they were jamming with Tom Waits covers. i'm pretty annoyed that Jen just wanted to go to bed after waiting there for an hour and a half, with a half hour to go until they started...but..water under the bridge i guess. we were in bed by 1.

saturday kicked off with against me!, then gogol bordello, cat power, iron&wine, jack johnson, pearl jam, and finally, and most definitely least, kanye west. artist all the way up to kanye west were fucking amazing. i fell in love with Cat Power. that woman's got some talent. i heard from Ryan when i got home that she gets extreme anxiety on stage, so i'm glad she stuck it out. seriously..what a damn good show. i was yawning a bit throughout..but..shes so good. haha. iron&wine was a little boring. i only stayed through 'house by the sea', but they played 'boy with a coin', too, so i was satisfied. i was also smoking a bowl with Jen and some girls that we met, and this dude leans in and goes, "HEY! you can't smoke that shit here!!", and i cooly responded with a, "hey man..last i checked, bonnaroo was a free world." he laughed and declined the hit i offered him. good times. jack johnson put on an impeccable show. i gained some appreciation for his music. Eddie Vedder and him did a duet cover of 'Constellations'. that was wicked good. and finally, after leaving pearl jam early to nap, and standing in a pit for 3 hours, and after Ash took a piss in a bag because she didn't want to get out of the pit, kanye being the main reason she came to the festival, Kanye graced us with his presence at 4:25am. he was due to play an hour an a half and be...you know, cool? he played for less than an hour and didn't say a single word to the crowd except for, "let me see your hands" during 'Diamonds in the Sky'. total dick head. i'm happy to say i have a reasonable reason to hate him now. he has effected me personally, so FUCK KANYE!! i suggest, you all do, too. GRANTED! his music was awesome and i danced my ass off. so we got to bed that night around 6am with our hearts heavy.

we left sunday afternoon without seeing any music. it was pretty disappointing, but Kevin and Jen wanted to go to this swimming hole, that we easily could have gone to the next day...but they got me to go too. i was pretty down from kanye, and there wasn't too much going on sunday. Ashley definitely could have used a pick-me-up, though. i think she was the most pissed off at kanye. lol. she peed in a bag in the middle of the pit in front of a hundred people for that mutha fucka!! i know chris rock gave us specific instructions of when and when not to use the word nigga. but, kanye west was a fuckin' nigga that night. the anger is still festering. you don't forget something like that!

the ride home was easy. the swimming hole was more than entertaining. Kevin and Jen got so into that river it was ridiculous. Kev ended up streaking down the road and some hillbillys saw him and loved it. hahaha. he got some hoots and hollers.

i can't wait to get back on the farm next year. LONG LIVE BONNAROOOOOOOOOO!!!!! everyone's invited. so, next year...get your bonnaroo on!

also, check out all the pics and videos i took on my facebook. there's sigur ros, iron&wine, jack johnson, and MGMT. MGMT is the best..check that out if nothing else. it gets my heart racing, and nostalgia sets in pretty quick. i can't stop thinking about the free world that is bonnaroo. it's not easy getting back into the swing of things in the 'real world'. not even kidding..

and, i'm off. work at Friendly's in two hours. fuck me.
