Tim, after 2 1/4 years at a Christian School (huge difference from Catholic school, I can assure you), the best advice I can give you is to take a theology class or inform yourself on this "faith", because I can assure you 100% that when people ask for help in God, they don't believe God just swoops down into their soul from the heavens or anything. Rather, they seek to God for forgiveness and love, and all that, which leads to inner strength; they ask God for him to give THEMSELVES inner strength, not just "meh, give me some strength so I can make this touchdown".

"they ask God for him to give THEMSELVES inner strength"

If they do "receive" this inner strength, I believe they had it the entire time, but they just failed to realize it. I believe that you gain inner strength from insight, life experiences, and self realization, not from some "all mighty" being.
