Misfits

Watched Misfits on recommendation from marianahkj, a British tv show about, as she puts it, "a group of young offenders who get caught in a lightning storm during their community service. They gain superpowers, end up getting into serious trouble, and holy shit it's fantastic. And their theme song rocks. Just...rocks."

The theme song does rock, btw. It's on my "to buy" list.

Anyways...

It took me a little while to get into this show. I mean, the premise was interesting enough, but at the end of the day it's almost always the characters who make it or break it for me. And honestly, the characters I did not find all that likable. Nathan, for one thing, is a total asshole. Funny to watch as he makes an asshole of himself, but still an asshole. Alisha, well, she's rather a shallow party girl, to put it nicely. Curtis is pretty cool, though he seems to have trouble with making good choices. Simon is...well, I'm torn on Simon. On the one hand, I want to hug him. A lot. Especially whenever Nathan opens his fat mouth. The poor kid just wants people to pay attention to him and respect him (and even that's not wholly required). On the other hand...he has some intensely creeperific, bordering-on-budding-sociopath moments that make me think he's the most potentially dangerous one of them all. Kelly, I have to say though, is probably my favorite. Oh, she's aggressive and somewhat abrasive, but she also doesn't take shite from anyone (especially Nathan lol), she stands up for people (like Simon, which makes me awww every time), and she's quite loyal. She has attitude, and she can lay a dude out. (It may or may not also have something to do with her resemblance to Lauren Cooper.)

So yeah, while it's not my absolute favorite show, I did enjoy it. The powers lend themselves to interesting situations, though usually not pleasant ones.

As far as shipping goes (because I can't help myself)... Alisha and Curtis are cute, although I kind of feel that Curtis could to do better. On the other hand, he will hopefully be good for Alisha. Though honestly I don't particularly care. The other canon-ish ship is Nathan/Kelly, though this one gives me issues because, again, Nathan is such an asshole. I mean, I kind of like him because he's amusing, but I also want to punch him in the face a lot (like whenever he talks to Simon). But my god, the him in episode 6...well, I suppose there's hope for him. At the same time though, I really hope that Kelly and Simon get closer, at least as friends, because that boy needs someone who doesn't treat him like shit.

Which brings me to Sally, I suppose. Another character I'm kind of torn on. I feel bad for her, because, well, her fiance is missing and she's trying to find out what happened to him. But...oh Simon. He's like a puppy. It was like kicking a puppy, and I knew it was going to happen (because what else could happen), and it was really hard to watch. :( And then...Simon sticks her in the freezer, and then his creepiness level gets boosted again. Oh Simon, you walk such a thin vanishing line, and I'm rather worried that the writers are going to push him completely over the Moral Event Horizon and then I will be very sad. Slightly more sad than if they just keep kicking the poor guy.

Anyway, apparently there is going to be a season 2, sometime around May, and I am totally waiting for Kelly to visit Nathan's grave and hear his strangely alive thoughts coming from the ground. You know, like in the fanfic (of which there is a depressingly small amount, but at least some of it is good and oh Simon).
