During World War II, on August 15, 1943, the refectory was struck by a bomb; protective sandbagging in front of the DaVinci wall fresco prevented the painting from being struck by bomb splinters, but it may have been damaged further by the vibration. This photo shows the bombing damage in 1943, suggesting the magnitude of the greater damage which was averted.
