Dean: "I'm tired, Sam. I'm tired of this job. This life. This weight on my shoulders, man, I'm tired of it."
Sam: "So you're just going to give up? You're just going to lay down and die?"

I think it's significant that the only time we've ever met Michael was in a place where we could also hang out with our old friend Uriel. If
starandrea turns out to be right about this, I'll be pretty damn happy.
Take one down, put it in the ground, ninety-eight problems of the apocalypse on the wall.
There's a lot of people bitching about What Dean Said in 5.17, and I just want to ask them "Are you paying attention?" Besides the fact that deflecting with humor about how great it is to vent anger by killing evil things being Dean's complete M.O., notice that the episode ended with
Dean leaving to literally sell his body. Sell his soul to demons, sell his body to the angels. If you thought the joke fell flat, well that's how it's supposed to sound considering what he decided to do because Dean is at the end of his tether and his coping mechanisms are falling through.
And as far as the other thing at the end everyone getting pissed about it, have you guys been paying attention? I know a lot of people tend to get wrapped up in their Wincest or Dean/Castiel subtextual stuff going on, but seriously, Dean has been idealizing normal family life, and in particular that family, for years. What Is and What Should Never Be, he's dating Carmen - who turns out to be a girl on a flyer for a trip to someplace else, someplace better. And then she shows up again in Dream a Little Dream of Me, in which it's clear that he's still thinking about it. In both Something Wicked and Dead in the Water he shows his gentleness towards kids, but particularly in The Kids Are Alright his wistfulness in wanting Ben to be his kid, the way he kept talking about his lack of a legacy in Season 3... well, that's one thing he's shown as wanting for himself.
The people complaining that it was out of the blue? The Rapture, Jump the Shark... in both these episodes Dean wants to keep people out of the supernatural and back into normal life (why hello there, trauma motif) so obviously no way with Lilith gunning for him and his brother, with demons trying to start the apocalypse, with angels trying to get him to say yes... no way in the middle of all of that would Dean bring that war down on a pair of civilians he wants to protect. Of course he wouldn't be dropping in on them unless he totally had to, and that scene was him giving up on ever winning the war and keeping his free will.
Jeez, this is just the stuff off the top of my head. I don't see the point in writing out a full essay because Dean and the Family Life and getting to be a great dad without all the supernatural crapola seems to me to be the most obvious thing he wants ever. He's not a demonstrative guy, he doesn't talk about his personal desires or his feelings very often. But it's been pretty obvious to me anyway.
Besides, if Ben really was his kid, like Dean hopes he is, guess who's next on the chopping block for Michael if he keeps holding out?
I've only watched
these promos for 5.18, but you know the last one?
I could've sworn I've read this fic before. Of course that was written back in season 4, but fandom can be remarkably prescient at times.
You know, my episode reactions tend to be more geared to fandom reactions of episode reactions. And heh, iTunes, I love it when you're so on point.
