chasingtides wrote an interesting meta commentary on ablebodiedness, fandom inconvenience, and Supernatural representing a minority believably:
Brain Trumps Legs.
I have a lot of thoughts about 5x08 (free will, determinism, meta, fourth wall bashing, blah blah blah) but most of it is totally subsumed with the fact that Kripke is the biggest fangirl ever in the history of fangirlism.
As far as the big reveal goes, I loved it. Even though fans are already bitching about reconning, but no, I think it's fabulous. I've always wondered why he pulled Mystery Spot, though I always figured there was a reason for the lesson. One of my absolute favorite things about Supernatural is that not only are there continuity nods every episode, information revealed later often reshapes our understanding of a previous episode into a greater understanding of the series as a whole. For example, what was going on with Dean freaking out at his mirror or flinching at the masks during It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester; or why Mary apologized to Sam back in Home; or why it mattered that Sam didn't get sick from the virus in Croatoan.
The fact that past episodes still continue to matter is one of the things I love about this show. The events of the past shape the characters before us, even if it seems a bit like an author saving throw once in awhile, I'll forgive it since it's done in the name of cohesion.
ALSO, THE JAPANESE GAME SHOW? Perfectly spot-on. The Japanese host and the SHRIMP CHIP MINI COMMERCIAL was absolutely perfect. That's exactly how it is over here. And even more awesomely, it wasn't Japanese like Hiro and Ando's incredibly slow speech style over on Heroes. It was. Normal speed. The only thing that may have been wrong with it was that I understood everything just fine. AKUMA, SAM. AKUMA MEANS DEMON. ANI YORI AKUMA.
In that pause where Dean was trying to "get into the game", I may have yelled "SPEAK JAPANESE TO ME JENSEN," loud enough for all of my Japanese neighbors to hear. Maybe. Though his "kotae wa" was so ?? I could only roll around laughing, it was so garbled. But his "sou desu" was perfect, and the game show host probably IS a game show host over here so that was awesome.
Not only that, but they were on Grey's Anatomy. I may have yelled about demanding to see certain deadbeat fathers, but I think if JDM had shown up I would have had a real life heart attack, so that's good.
And then. Sam was the car. SAM WAS INSIDE THE IMPALA. Christ, Kripke, I leave you alone for five minutes and you're back to writing fanfic even if it was in the name of Knight Rider. Lies!
