It's been monsooning for almost 24 hrs, and definately varying degrees of "rainy" for about 3 days. This most recent batch of precipitation has been coupled with freezing temperatures over night, causing power outages. Since moving to our new house in Berlin, we've noticed that we're kind of prone to power outages and brown outs, leading me to believe that National Grid is complete rubbish. Our first month in the house, our street lost power overnight. This led us to discover that we can't flush toilets with no power (our water pump requires electricity to get water out of the well). This most recent power outage last night/today (and in National Grid's defense, it spanned so far as I know the towns of Berlin and Hudson, and the city of Marlborough, the latter of which are serviced by different power companies) led to the discovery that d'oh, we don't have heat even though we have an oil tank. Jim also realized that downpour plus no electricity will likely lead to bad things in our basement as our sump pump cannot operate.
Last night the power went out around 11, as we were getting ready for bed. It came back on at some point in the night because I woke up and the lights were on in the bedroom. I shut them off, and figured all would be well in the morning. Nope! Local schools were cancelled, because of the power failures. Of course I still had to go to work, so I packed some toiletries so I could shower at work. I think this is the final straw that we needed to suck it up and buy some sort of emergency generator.
Home ownership rocks!
