"For I am divided for love's sake, for the chance of union." AL I:29

i am doing some research for my role as the officiant in a wedding which will be held on 06/06/06 for a couple of friends...

although i have always been a proponent of alternatives to marriage, i am happy to celebrate the union of willing participants in marriage!

while we're at it, here are the Statutes form the TX Family Code regarding marriage

but let us remember that marriage is ultimately between the individuals who are married... here are some words from Dionysis Thriambos on The Sovereignty of Marriage: "In the view of Thelemic Gnosis, marriage is the fundamental sacred act in manifest existence."

Similarly, from A Wedding Ceremony prepared for the use of Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica clergy: "In Thelema, the Mystery of Marriage is a magical expression of the divine process which continually creates the Universe, the formula of which is 'love under will.'" The Ninth Collect from Liber XV pertains to marriage, and Sabazius X mentions marriage briefly in this essay: The Sacramental System of Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica.

Freedom to marry provides some excellent resources analyzing the current state of marriage: The Rights & Responsibilities of Marriage

whenever i set out to help design a ritual with a group, there are a few things that i generally use as frameworks in my head:
Common Worship: How and Why: The contribution of Von Ogden Vogt ...& Other Models
the hero's journey : summary of the steps
i found a new tool this evening: Ritual Creation Worksheet

this webpage has a great overview of handfasting
...there's more handfasting info here ...and here's an excerpt from a book that contains diverse wedding & handfasting rituals

one of the best resources on wedding vows that i have found is @ belief.net:
The Wedding Vows Exchange (which you can search or browse)
...belief.net also has further resources on marriages

heatherthegreat, S_ from Sasona, & i attended Annie Sprinkle & Elizabeth Stephens' Love Art Laboratory recently, and they shared their views on marriage with all of us... i'll have to dig up the handout that one of their friends provided with the pros & cons of marriage!

ADDENDUM:

here's an atheist/humanist ceremony i helped organize for 10/31/06 @ 19:00

death, marriage, children, insurance, wedding
