x-posted from a discussion in a private forum, concerning the necromantic aspects of regenerative &/or medical technology, (continuing in a similar theme to the
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" post on 2004-08-11 @ 05:57:00)
my early experiences were shaped by my love of micronauts toys (whoa... action figures, vehicles, and cities, all with interchangeable parts? ...like legos on psychedelic steroids! awesome!) q.v.
Micro Heritage / From Henshin Cyborg (through the Micronauts) to the Transformers / The Legacy of Microman 1972-present the microverse was ruled by an infernal despot known as Baron Karza. citizens of the aptly named, "Homeworld" would eventually get into debt from rising taxes, gambling, or spending too long in the "Pleasure Pits," and they would be offered an opportunity to escape prison and/or the gladiatorial arena by selling their limbs and vital organs to the "Body Banks." when they didn't have any more spare parts to sell, they could pledge their life into the service of Baron Karza's military, the "Dog Soldiers," where they would be outfitted with cybernetic replacement body parts, and the occaisional horrific genetic mutation.
` ` ...pure, legendary evil itself in the form of Baron Karza. Ah yes....Karza. ' '
` ` If Daimon Hellstrom had been the son of Karza(instead of SATAN) he wouldn't have rebelled and carried a trident and pentagram tatoo around. He would have been sold as replacement parts for the rich. Why? Because. Baron Karza is more Thanos than Thanos, more DarkSeid than DarkSeid and the most "bad to the bone" hard-core Darth Vader ripoff ever let loose in comics. ' '
` ` You never really knew just how he was beaten by the same five guys over and over again and he never stayed dead. His hands shot off just like the Shogun Warriors. He had four "nipple guns", a "Gut-gun" and could turn into a robo-centaur at will. He was also a freakin' demigod and sorceror made of evil(red) energy. Compared to him even the much more famous Victor Von Doom was a sad unequipped little wussy. Doctor GlitterNight was probably afraid of him too and HE used to throw planets around with Snake Woman and Goat Child.(I think...) Karza was so damn cool he was even Punk...he had a mohawk and eye makeup. He was a Chief Scientist. He had a personal Force field that nobody seemed able to breach. How cool is that? ' '
- exerpted from a random piece of fan mail for Baron Karza so, my point is that the question is not so much what tech you're using, but towards what end are you purposing it, eh? (q.v.
Left-Hand Path and Right-Hand Path, From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
right hand path?
although i can do without dogmatism, i respect commitment to expertise within a particular skillset
left hand path?
of course i appreciate liberty, but individual ethics do still require integrity/honour/virtue
and just like in politics, if you go too far to one extreme, you either wind up on the other side, or you're just plain crazy!
so, i'm actually just criticizing the megalomaniacs and sociopaths who have gone off the deep end of either path...
every wednesday, i attend a discussion group, which is composed of extremely tolerant people... burners, magickians, and other idiosyncratic folks. amusingly enough, a couple of weeks ago, we were discussing "taboos," of which you might imagine we were in short supply? well, there were still some to be found, and i realized that even i have some! particlularly pertinent to our topic here, is that i realized that i got creeped out way back in high school when i started studying recombinant dna, seeing all of the mice with human ears growing out of their backs... and then there's the bio-engineered micro-organism that they released to clean up the oil spill, that had to be contained before it devoured all life on the ocean floor...
i'm thinking that we need to avoid creating the scenario in which the Shoggoths revolted against their masters, destroying The Elder Things' civilization, y'know? it seems that we've got to develop more mature ethics to keep pace with our technologies. not some kind of dogmatic moralism; but perhaps reason & responsibility can provide the inspiration? i know, i'm an idealist... i should just learn to smite all those who oppose my mighty will! ah, but that's too easy.
