The problem that I have with a lot of the 2012 stuff is the diametrically opposed views of what is supposed to happen -- or not -- on Der jüngste Tag. These range from "peace on earth, good will to men" (the Mckennas, some New Age groups) to "war, famine, pestilence, and death" (other New Age writers, environmental wackos, and the always among us Evangelical lunatics).
According to the classical Maya, of course, the end of the Baktun was not-a-good-time-to-be-around, and when you mix that with the evangelicals and the environmental extremists and their neo-Calvinist view of humans as totally fucked, you get a lot of really destructive views of what will happen floating around.
I try to remain optimistic about all of this, in the spirit of R.A. Wilson, but sometimes it is really hard to do. Too many crazies with too many WMDs ... .
My understanding is that the Mayans didn't really say much about what happens at the end of the calender, only that it ends. I could be reading a different interpretation though (it's important to remember that only about 10% of Mayan glyphs have been interpreted, and it's only been happening for about two decades).
I'm seeing Derrick McKenna (T's brother) speak in two weeks, should be interesting :)
