Reason #45 why usually seek out the least-traveled destinations I can find On the shuttle from the airport this morning: American Lady: Excuse me, can you change twenty dollars for me? Me: Sure ((handing her 200 pesos)) AL: ((stares blankly)) Me: Oh, yeah....its like ten point five to the dollar now, right? ((Digs in pocket for a 1-peso coin)) AL: What are those? Me: Tenners....and a one-peso coin if I can find it..... AL: I see that, but what are they? Me: What are what? AL: Pesos. Me: ((dawning realization of what´s going on, followed by chagrined disappointment)) Pesos are Mexican money. You need Pesos to buy things in Mexico. AL: ((pause)) Me: ((pause)) AL: So what´s wrong with normal money?
"Why do we even have that lever?" - One the bus to Chetumal (so long and thanks for the cheap flights, Cancun) a local couple was letting their toddler play with their cell phone, which was apparently set up with a feature I´ve never seen before: the ability to play a ringtone on an infinite loop, the same seven notes over and over and over and over and....and what sort of fucked up engineer thought to include that functionality? What earthly purpose, apart from enteraining toddlers and/or aggravating bystanders, could the possibly hope to achieve? To my great relief, that battery finally ran dead about four hours later.
On an unrelated note - This is the first trip when I´ve brought earplugs with me. I´ve long maintained that everything in the world south of the Tropic of Cancer happens at about 5 decibels louder than it needs to be, and that about 50% of activities that could easily be done quietly still manage to make a racket, so these earplugs have increased my enjoyment of this trip considerably.
