You're right! I had completely forgotten about the mango vodka laboratory....I realized only long after the fact that I had become someone's "horrible college roomate" story, to wit, the guy who commadeered the communal kitchen to make a giant stinky moonshine still.
But mushrooms: in this case, one gets shiitake cultures from one's mother, who got the original spores from an online supplier whose name I forget. We're getting Maitake and Oyster colonies later this year if all pans out.
....and (you'll dig this) there's apparently a new strain of Oyster mushroom that has been bred to prefer spent espresso grounds as its growth medium. Alas, this is a warm-weather strain, so I wouldn't be able to keep it alive up here for more than a year.....though apparently the colonies have a lifespan of several decades if they're kept well.
