I try my best to avoid news commentary, esp that which stems from the Financial Pages, but....
NTP is a parasitic slug, a patent troll of the worst kind who contributes nothing to society or technology or the economy, instead using the absurdities of international intellectual property law to drain money from legitimate businesses who fielded the risk and the capital to bring a great new product into public usage.
I don't care who bought what rights from whom, or who owns what rights to what: I hope Research in Motion finds some way to stick it to 'em bigtime.
There. I said it.
(For those curious, I'm deeply opposed to a wide swath of intellectual property law...not least the parts that allow situations like this, where a company that spend hundreds of millions of research to develop an new product, only to find years later that they can be threatened by a holding company that bought fire-sale patents for a similar technology from a bankrupt company that went nowhere with the idea. Nevermind the fact that they're a multibillion corporate titan: Research in Motion has the moral high ground, even if they are technically in violation of copyright law. The entire idea of intellectual property becomes absurd when patents can be traded in this way.)
