I gave my final presentation today. All went well, so all I have left to do is sit back, relax, and watch everybody else's reports.
God bless Dr. V. After sitting through the presentation of an individual who will remain nameless, the following exchange took place between Dr. V and the presenter:
Dr. V: So, if I understand you correctly, this is a non-Abelian model of electromagnetism?
Presenter: Yes.
V: So what's what type of quantity is your "x"?
P: Ah...that's kind of a strange question. Since B and A are non-Abelian, x has to be too, so it's sort of a non-Abelian analogue to position.
V: But we KNOW that position is Abelian, so what bearing does your research have on physical reality?
P: Uhhh...none, I guess.
V: So why do you call it physics?
*awkward silence*
I really wanted to snicker, since nameless presenter and I have spent much time argueing about the relavence of experiment and the importance of theorists paying attention to experimental results. Watching him have his rear handed to him in such a manner was beautiful. I think the best part is that wondering whether or not his research has relavence to the real world is, to the presenter, a "strange question".
Well, I'm off to enjoy my two weeks of relaxation before class.
