So this was a strange Halloween. It's the first Halloween where we had potential trick-or-treaters coming. So accordinly, we bought about 12 pounds of candy from Costco. About 4 pounds of it was consumed prior to Halloween of course...

So it gets dark by about 6:30. Normally this is when all the little kids would be coming by in herds with their parents behind, so we have Conan all dressed up and we pretty much wait for the door. Nobody comes... Eventually we get sick of waiting, by 7:30 no one has come. Zhen is annoyed, so we just get in the car and figure we'll drive around and go down by campus and just see some neat Halloween stuff. As we're leaving, there's one pack of young kids who is on the other side of the street, oh well. We would have had one potential group of 3 kids to consume the remaining 8 pounds of candy.

We drive around Northwest Austin around Mesa and Greystone. There's one street that is completely lined with cars and packed full of people. I remember when I was a kid and all the neighborhood kids were always out and people were all over the place, it was a lot of fun. Pretty much every year it was me and JE going all over the place hitting up every house even if the lights were off and there was a giant "FUCK OFF" sign. So this is by far the most people I've ever seen walking around on Halloween, or in that area of town regardless.

As we were sitting in the car looking for cool costumes, we noticed that hardly any kids had costumes. Instead, it was just swarms of little mexican kids who's parents had just dropped them off in NW austin to pick up as much candy as possible. No costumes, nothing... just a big sack. I can understand it would suck to be a kid in the hood where you can't get any candy, but it sucks even more to have to answer the door every 10 seconds because the entire neighborhood is saturated with people who don't even live there. Suddenly our 1 potential missed group of trick-or-treaters doesn't look so bad.

Another funny thing I saw is a bunch of parents who would just pull up in front of a house... the kids would jump out of the car, go to the door, get some candy, then jump back in the car. The parents would then drive them to the next house 20 feet away. No wonder everyone in this country is fat...

We didn't really see anything cool on campus. It's amazing that it hasn't even been a year since we moved away from campus, but the drag already looks really different. I want to try that Mellow Mushroom pizza place, it looks like a big stoner pizzaria.

If I had remembered, I would have driven by Richard Garriott's house (the ultima guy who has the insane halloween parties) because it's literally down the street from me. Apparently he doesn't do that anymore, but there's probably be something worth seeing. There's always a bunch of nerds taking photos in front of his house which always cracks me up.

All in all, it was an interesting halloween. It would have been fun to do a halloween party, maybe we'll get something going next year!
