Above is my first-ever homemade mint julep.

What I learned:

Use lots of mint. Normally a little mint goes a long way. A modest-sized sprig can give a minty tang to a whole pitcher of iced tea. But to overcome the power of bourbon, it seems you can't have too much mint. (Or perhaps I didn't muddle the leaves enough on this first-go round. At any rate, I added some more mint and pushed the leaves below the ice with a spoon.)

Also it's better to let the drink set a spell (to use a Southernism). Use a straw, too, and put the straw near but not right over some mint leaves at the bottom. You don't want to plug the end of the straw up, but if the leaves are right there and you sip slowly, the mint infusion gets right into the flow.
