"Vulcans never bluff"

Unfortunately the line from which my post's subject title is taken could not be heard in last night's Trek broadcast, because that key bit of the scene between Matt Decker and Spock was part of the material snipped to make room for commercials. The outrage! One second, Spock is saying Decker is relieved, the next Decker is relenting and magically the two security officers are already standing behind him. The exchange about bluffing, Spock motioning for security to come closer -- all cut out. Normally the trims are tiny and one doesn't notice their absence, but that whole sequence is one of the highlights I wait for. I do have the whole original series uncut on DVD, so it's not that big of a deal I guess. I did like the new visual effects. The Machine was satisfyingly opaque, and I appreciate how they made the ship movements (of both Federation vessels) more interesting and realistic. Despite the obvious CGI-ishness of the new effects, I do like a lot them in these revamped shows. The comet in "Balance of Terror" was a great improvement over the original version. (But it is still not right that a comet have such a huge bright tail without being close to a sun.)
Oh, and I can't forget to mention how much I like Sol Kaplan's music for the Doomsday Machine -- very Wagnerian and memorable. Gerald Fried is still my favorite original series Trek composer, though.
