when we are as one

when we are as one, the minutes slip away
into the mysterious beyond; distantly, time flows without waves or ripples,
in one smooth and fluid core. our breaths mark the moments
spent drifting between mind and body, hesitantly.

the tension in our veins tightens around private fears, pushing close
against the heaviness of our eyelids; the heat that fills us both
with hazy need comes and goes in waves of life and latency.
as your hands find their purchase, my muscles murmur approval.

the animals that we all are inside rear their roaring heads between us,
and as screaming energy tears up our nerves, we collide as meteors.
white hot force ruins us, when we are as one,
and the texture of this love is like sand between my fingers.

only to the rhythm of the biological clock do we move,
and when held still we can feel the seconds pulse
rendering love and loss from similar feelings of agony,
the tide changes, we join and break, swinging between desire and denial.

though i cannot explain the urgency that compels me,
the life flowing in my veins and yours causes us to understand;
the lights of reality and heaven shine equally bright,
reflecting off our perspiration, blinding.

when we are as one, our bodies find the answer our minds could not,
the reason that lies snugly between pleasure and pain:
every gasp drawn for pleasure is a deeper clutch at the truth,
and every movement proves to us that we are wildly alive.
