It is so hard for me to stop watching shows that I have been fannishly involved in. Smallville, Supernatural, Doctor Who, Sherlock (BBC), Teen Wolf and so many others.
Smallville was actually easier for me to stop watching because the reasons I quit watching were 'purely fannish'. That is, it was because of how it violated my view of the previous canon for the characters that finally made me stop.
The others I've listed up there....I quit because of 'social justice' reasons and somehow I feel like doing that is considered....less valid? I'm more self-conscious about the reasons I quit watching them even though I fully believe in those reasons.
The racism, sexism, classism and homophobia issues all just finally got to the point where I could not keep ignoring them enough to enjoy any part of the show.
And actually that's part of my problem. I'm sort of ashamed that it took me so long to walk away from these shows who were so over the top horrid on those moral issues.
Oh, to clarify, this is About Me. This is not about other people and how they relate to shows and participate in fandom. I'm not trying to tell anyone that they can't watch the shows they enjoy just because I find them too problematic to watch personally.
And then I also feel like crap because I've left a show but I have friends who are still into it and I want to express my upset with the show but I don't want them to feel like I'm attacking them personally, because that is SO not the case.
So not because of anything my friends have said directly, but just because of me or whatever, I feel I sort of like I shouldn't post about the problems I have with certain shows. Even though I often can't help myself but do just that. At least on tumblr. There's a lot of good fandom meta on tumblr, if only it was more findable and the platform was any good for discussion.
I have no idea where I was going with this, but I felt an urge to get it out after seeing this post on tumblr about BBC Sherlock:
